Tweed Needs Protecting: The Tweed Foundation was set up in 1983 by the River Tweed Commission to protect and enhance the freshwater fish stocks in the River and is a charitable company limited by guarantee. It is one of the leading organisations in the field of fisheries research and management, and operates with a small and dedicated team that relies on donations from the membership, riparian owners, the River Tweed Commission and others to fulfill its work programme; it has no public funding.
Pressures facing Tweed at present have never been greater and the status of the fish stocks is an indicator of this. Urban development, habitat loss and reduction in quality, agricultural intensification, marine and predator exploitation and the threat of disease are some of the many challenges that have resulted in a decline in fish stocks throughout Scotland recently. Tweed is a major contributor to the Borders economy with £18m annually brought into the region from angling. Its health and future well-being are essential not just for angling but also to the Scottish Borders people, its wildlife and the UK as a whole.
The Foundation carries out a tremendous volume of research and analysis in order to provide the Tweed Fishery managers, including the River Tweed Commission, with objective scientific data on which to base fisheries management decisions, much of which is detailed on this website.
It is fundamental to the well-being of the River that all of this work continues and, as a charitable trust, your support is crucial in keeping the momentum going and safeguarding the River for future generations to enjoy. Please support The Foundation’s work in any way you can.
